The Capital God Has Given Us

As Brigham Young passed through poverty and plenty time and time again in the early years of the Church, he developed a key insight that he later passed on to his daughters. "Our time is all the capital God has given us," he told them, "and if we waste that we are bankrupt indeed."

Susa Young Gates, History of the Young Ladies' Mutual Improvement Association of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, from November 1869 to June 1910 (1911), 9

Blue Mountain Bookstore

About the Bookstore
Blue Mountain Bookstore is an independent used bookstore located at the corner of Main & Center in downtown Union, Oregon.

The city of Union, named after the north side of the Civil War, is situated inside Eastern Oregon's Grande Ronde Valley, the largest enclosed valley in the US. The Blue Mountains form the western edge of this great circle, and according to reliable sources they're called the Blue Mountains on account of their color. They look blue sometimes.

I almost called the bookstore Ellipsis.

The bookstore's located in an old brick building. Aaron Sommer built it in 1870, and went on to build a bunch of other brick buildings in La Grande and Summerville. The Levy Brothers General Store ran here for several decades, serving as a supply point on the Oregon Trail, and later for the gold mines and lumber operations that once thrived in the region. It was a Baptist church in the 70s into the 80s. Sometimes it served as a theater for film and live performance. The Books

All kinds of books on all kinds of subjects, from rare collectibles to trashy pulp fiction. We'll gradually list select inventory online here in the form of a rare book catalogue.

Head Over Heels - Fainting Goat Farm

A myotonic goat, otherwise known as the fainting goat, is a domestic goat whose muscles freeze for roughly 10 seconds when the goat feels panic. Though painless, this generally results in the animal collapsing on its side. The characteristic is caused by a hereditary genetic disorder called myotonia congenita. When startled, younger goats will stiffen and fall over. Older goats learn to spread their legs or lean against something when startled, and oftentimes they continue to run about in an awkward, stiff-legged shuffle.

Dora's Garden - Local Organic Produce

Our 50-acre irrigated field is currently planted with perennial alfalfa which is harvested for hay. Near the center of the field is a seasonal wet spot (dimensions vary with year) where the water table approaches ground surface. The area is too moist for alfalfa. We plan to plant edible blue Camas Root in our seasonal wet spot.

Beginning in 2012 our 50-acre field will be subdivided into five sections of approximately 10 acres each. Each year one section will be taken out of alfalfa production, planted with a grain crop such as wheat or barley, then planted with varied combinations of the following cover crops: medic, sweet clover, rye, barley, sorghum-sudangrass hybrid, wheat and mustard. With the exception of the harvested alfalfa hay and partial harvest of the first grain crop, the cut vegetative matter will be left on the ground to compost. After two years alfalfa will be broadcast sown again. The complete rotation will require five years. In each year after the first year, 30 acres will be in alfalfa hay production, 10 acres will be in a grain crop followed by cover crop and 10 acres will be in sequential mixed cover crops. All crops will be broadcast sown with compost.

The 100' x 200' (approximately 0.5 acre) garden will not be tilled again. There are 50 permanent rows. The first five rows are planted with perennials: plums, catnip, asparagus, raspberries, and perennial herbs. Rows 6-50, each 12" wide with 3' between rows, are planted with rotated annuals. New Zealand White Clover is planted between the rows. The rows are first hand-dug to a depth of 15", filled with soil combined with alfalfa hay and compost, topped with compost, a soaker hose and a final covering of alfalfa hay. In subsequent years, the rows are top dressed with compost and seeds are planted into the compost, topped with soaker hose and alfalfa hay mulch. Cropping, cover cropping and mulching is continual, i.e. soil is never bare.
